Module 1: Water
The Water module explores data on historial water return periods, satellite data of near-real time flood zones, and local lead in water tests. This module covers the water cycle and how it impacts humans, and how humans are affected by changes in the water cycle. The module consists of three use cases that cover examples of water use, safety, and anomalies such as droughts and floods. Each use case uses a unique dataset to walk users through lessons in accessing and analyzing data, and further adapting the code to perform their analyses including data cleaning, processing to subset to an area of interest, and creating visualizations to share what they have learned with their communities.
Module 2: Air Quality
The Air Quality module explores air quality data at different levels of analysis, including student-led community monitoring, using the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) to highlight areas at greater risk for adverse health outcomes due to environmental hazards, to exploring the Environmental Protection Agency’s EJScreen data visualization tool, to tracking air quality for international policy.
Module 3: Disasters
The Disasters module explores different types of natural and anthropogenic disasters, such as observing coastal hazards including hurricanes and sea level rise, monitoring wildfires using a multidata approach, learning how to develop a hazard assessment, and considering multihazards on vulnerable populations.
Module 4: Climate and Agriculture
The Climate and Agriculture module explores how climate change and the changing ecosystems impact global food systems, particularly agricultural processes.
Module 5: Community Generated
The Community Generated module is a collection of short-form learning modules submitted by the TOPS SCHOOL community. Their topics range with all thematic areas covered in the SCHOOL project and demonstrate parts of the data science life cycle.
